Elective Rotations
To Non-McGaw Institution
- To initiate an elective rotation request to a non-McGaw institution, submit non-McGaw elective paperwork to Sarah Boblink no less than 120 days prior to the proposed start date of the planned rotation.
- Trainees on international elective rotations are required to obtain, at their own expense, and provide proof of an individual GeoBlue supplementary health insurance policy with minimum medical coverage of $1,000,000. McGaw residents and fellows are not eligible to enroll in Northwestern University’s plan which is solely coordinated for students.
- Trainees must monitor the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Levels. Travel to Level 4 locations will not be considered. Travel to Level 3 locations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and are generally discouraged. McGaw reserves the right to withdraw rotation approval at any time if a site’s advisory level increases. Trainees are strongly advised to purchase travel insurance, as McGaw will not reimburse costs if rotation approval is withdrawn.
- Any travel to an external site for greater than 31 days requires approval of the McGaw president.
- A Program Letter of Agreement (PLA) must be created for all required and elective rotations at participating sites outside the base hospital. The PLA outlines the educational responsibilities shared between the program and the participating site, including goals and objectives, supervision and evaluation. All PLAs must be completed using the official McGaw template.
